As the summer weather sizzles, relax by the pool with stirring tales of handsome cowboys and the spirited ladies who wrangle them into romance. Six of Christian fiction’s most beloved authors join forces to bring you a collection of humorous, romantic and heartfelt novellas set against the sultry heat of summer.

In Mary Connealy’s, “Dr. Tess and the Cowboy”, sparks fly when Dr. Tessa Rhoades discovers dinosaur bones on Joe Holt’s ranch and decides to excavate—even if that means kicking Joe off his own land.

In “Hometown Girl” by Cheryl St.John, injured rodeo champion Justin Cooper returns to the sleepy Oklahoma town he escaped for fame and fortune--and takes his biggest tumble yet--straight into the arms of Stevie Marshall, his first love who soon has him questioning his life choices.

In Tina Radcliffe’s, “Lake Effect”, cynical cowboy Tucker Jackson knows he’s in trouble when he starts counting the days until the end of summer and praying ‘summer girl’ Jessica Richards will find a home for her heart in Paradise.

In "His Lone Star Heart" by Missy Tippens, rancher Zeb West tries hard not to fall for Beecher Brown, the feisty but off-limits sister of his best friend. As she tries to prove she's capable of running her family's ranch--the one he's trying to buy--he might just find he's met his match...for life.

Will Lorna Seilstad’s characters make “Great Strides” when Dana Etherton, the owner of a horse therapy ranch, must choose between the kids she serves and Adam Malone, the embezzler who’s been assigned to do community service there?

When Paige Monroe agrees to draw the press away from a country star’s wedding by pretending to be the look-alike bride, she wasn’t counting on having very real feeling for her decoy fiancé, Sterling Tanner.  In Sherri Shackelford’s, “The Decoy Bride”, two people feigning love forget they’re acting.

I am excited to be chatting with Missy Tippens on the blog today! Welcome, Missy, and thank you for chatting with us about His Lone Star Heart and a little about your life and about being an author!

What inspired you to write the story His Lone Star Heart?

Missy: Ellie, first, let me say thank you so much for having me on your blog! I’m excited to be here.

When I was invited to take part in the boxed set, I liked the idea of challenging myself by writing my first cowboy story. But as soon as I got ready to start working on it, I got a little scared. How could I, who’d never had any experience on a ranch, write this story? Then I began to picture a handsome cowboy…who’d had a difficult childhood (bouncing from foster home to foster home, feeling angry and rejected)…trying to overcome that past and make a place for himself in his community…trying to maybe even find home and family. I knew I wanted to tell his story. So I sent off emails to two of my good friends who live on ranches (Mary Connealy and Pam Hillman) to ask if they’d help me with the ranching details. They very generously agreed and were a huge help!

How did the collaboration of authors come together for Cowboys of Summer?

Missy: Sherri Shackelford and Cheryl St. John, both historical writers, decided to try their hands at contemporary cowboy stories. So they put together the group of authors. As they were discussing the project, my name got tossed in the mix. When they invited me to join in, I was honored and jumped at the chance!

What has surprised you the most about being an author?

Missy: I’ve been most surprised by the generosity of readers through their sweet letters and support. It probably shouldn’t have surprised me! Readers are wonderful, and we all love books. But when I started getting those precious letters, I was extremely touched that they would take the time to write to me.

What has been one of the most rewarding experiences for you as an author?

Missy: The first thing that popped into my mind was opening the first box of books from Harlequin Love Inspired and holding a book with my name on the cover for the very first time. I plopped down in the kitchen floor and bawled my eyes out. :) I had worked hard and pushed past a lot of rejections for over 10 years before seeing my dream come true. It was amazing.

What does a typical day look like for you when you are writing?

Missy: My days vary like crazy. But I can tell you an ideal day. :) That would be waking, feeding the dog, and then having coffee and breakfast. Reading my Bible, usually a devotional plan on my Bible app. Then checking in on email, my blogs and social media. Next, I spend time writing—which could be planning a story, writing new words, revising, writing blog posts, and even working on things like covers. Throughout the day, I check email, and that usually leads to reading industry articles and blogs (and Pinning recipes!). I also like to take online classes and attend industry webinars. There’s always something to learn!

Do you have a favorite Bible verse or a verse that is particularly meaningful to you right now? If so, what is it and why is it meaningful?

Missy: My sweet father recently passed away after several hospitalizations and battling Alzheimer’s. This year has been difficult. Over the months, I’ve been strengthened by these three verses…
  • Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24 (NIV)
  • Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 (NIV)
  • See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

What are you planning next?

Missy: I’m planning to release two indie novellas soon. Both were previously published in boxed sets with other authors from the Seekerville blog. I just had covers made and look forward to seeing these available again! I’ve also just been asked to take part in a book of devotionals. I hope to be able to officially share that news soon. :)

Thanks again for having me on your blog, Ellie!

Thank you, again, for taking the time to be here!
